Traveling around the world
One of the biggest benefits of living and working in Dubai is its greater reach as a major transportation hub. Lisa, Isabela and I use this to our greatest advantage.
Since leaving Australia in 2001 we have traveled extensively throughout the US, Latin America, Asia, Sub Continent, Asia Minor, Western, Central and Eastern Europe, Africa, south Pacific and the Middle East.
The more travel we do we realise that there are still plenty of more to travel to, so to date out of the currently identified 257 countries we have traveled (not for work) to 49 already, from backpacking through India, five country safari through southern Africa to a naturalist tour through several islands of the Galapagos.
When you travel a whole new world opens up which is something we want to impress upon Isabela so that she can experience so many new opportunities. Traveling gives us the ability to look around and see what is possible, open up new doors and witness sights, sounds and smells we would never see by staying at home.
We believe that the best experiences one receives through traveling are tasting the local cuisine and experiencing the culture. Sometimes the latter is hard to do, especially if you don’t know any locals. Almost all of our best experiences traveling have resulted from traveling with companies who have a strong local presence, like GAP or Intrepid Tours. Travel companies such as these gives us the ability to travel with like minded, to a point, people and visit places 'off the beaten track' such as staying with local families instead of 5 star hotels and resorts and using local transport (to a point!)
So many of the best things you can do in a foreign city are not listed in the run of the mill tourist guidebooks. Lisa and I always make it a point when we travel to try and avoid those areas designated as a 'tourist trap' as much as possible.
As Lisa and I are avid 'sun seekers' and divers and we try to balance our holidays between ancient civilisations, as when we back packed through Peru, to diving with the Manta Rays when we stayed in the Maldives at the Kuramathi Island Resort. We have been very fortunate with Isabela and traveling, she now has completed over 80 flights to 22 different countries. |
